Ipsy - September 2013

CLASSIC BEAUTY

Gotta love the classics....from classic novels, to classic movies, to classic fashion and of course...classic beauty! The thing that every woman should have on hand, are the classic staples of a good makeup/beauty collection that's elegant, feminine and chic.

If you missed my REVEAL post for this month, here is the link for your perusal! -

and now, here is what I received this month!...

I received: a lip balm, a mascara, an eyeshadow, a polish and an eyeliner

Everyone received the same mascara, as well as a single eyeshadow from NYX but the other items varied. I ADORE this month's bag! I think it's absolutely stunning! There was some talk about the lace pattern being disrupted but until I actually had it in my hand did I notice that it's not actually disrupted or not printed correctly...there are butterflies on it! Do you see the butterfly with the lace wings in the center aimed towards the mascara I set up there? Sneaky little flutterby!

Time to look at my classic beauty must-haves!...

CAILYN COSMETICS
TINTED LIP BALM
in Big Apple

"Indulge in colors that last and formulas that enrich! Formulated using "3D smart film former", this ultra matte, super moisturizing lip balm offers you rich colors with amazing staying power." - from cailyncosmetics.com

So this is my second Cailyn Cosmetics product, and I must say, it did not disappoint! I received a gel eyeliner from them a few months back in a previous Ipsy Glam Bag and I adored it, and it's quite possible that I love this product even more! The packaging is, in fact, exactly the same as the eyeliner...a jar with a tall lid that holds the applicator brush. I love the cute design, but I will say that it's a bit of a pain to store if you're not just placing it on a shelf. For the time being, I keep all my main pieces of makeup in a fold out makeup case and I can lay this product inside but it does awkwardly take up some space, whereas, if I just had a shelf to put it on, it'd be much happier, less bulked up and not be in the way.

As for the product itself, my oh my, LOOK at that pigmentation! That's read, you read it correctly, that is ONE single swipe on the bottom! Tinted lip balm? More like KA-POW! Color in your FACE! It is PIGMENTED! You can also see how fabulously it blends into a softer pink-toned red if you'd prefer to soften the look. It's very soft and smooth when applied, but dries to a completely matte finish, which I LOVE. It stayed ka-put on my lips for hours after application and although it did dry my lips out ever so slightly, I didn't mind just from the amount of pigmentation and staying-power. If your lips crackle a lot when a product dries them out, I'd highly recommend putting on a lip balm about 5 minutes before you apply this, then lightly dabbing some lip balm or lip gloss every couple of hours after.

ELIZABETH MOTT
IT'S SO BIG VOLUMIZING MASCARA

"A unique formula that lengthens and curls your lashes, without smudging! Maintains mega volume for the whole day, and is easily removed. The hourglass brush shape, with it's long and short bristle pattern, delivers just the right amount of mascara to each lash (like magic!), watch your lashes grow BIGGER with each layer." - from elizabethmott.com

I am SO picky about mascaras....well I take that back....my LASHES are so picky about mascara! ::giggles:: They are short, slant downwards and don't like to hold a curl. However, this might be one the best mascaras I've received in a beauty sub! I LOVE the wand, it's very similar to my favorite NYX Doll Eye Long Lash mascara that I use every day. I much prefer short-bristled, hourglass shaped brush heads because I feel I can get closer to the roots of my lashes without getting product on my eyelids. The oooonly thing I think they could have done to absolutely complete this wand and make it's wow-factor skyrocket is to have added some bristles to the tip of the brush just like Benefit's They're Real. THAT would have made it a all-encompassing phenomenal mascara! Regardless, I still love it! It leaned on the lengthening side a teensy bit more than the volumizing side, but it still plumped the lashes a bit and was very easy to layer with multiple coats. I also had no trouble with smudging throughout the day while wearing it (I used Urban Decay's De-Slick Setting Spray) and had no trouble taking it off at night with makeup remover wipes. It also played well with other mascaras when I tried pairing it up with some other brands for more volume or more length. All in all, I'll be reaching for this mascara often!

I neglected to take a picture of just this mascara by itself, but I am wearing it in the Finale pics, so keep on reading!

NYX
SINGLE EYESHADOW
in Cryptonite

"Punch it up. Thanks to our high-fashion, high-intensity pigments, our signature pressed shadows pack a punch of color, yet are incredibly easy to blend. Go edgy or understated effortlessly, and enjoy the luscious, long-wearing color from sunrise to sunset...and beyond." - from nyxcosmetics.com

This girl LOOOOVES her eyeshadow! and as you can tell from my mascara post, I'm a NYX lover as well, so this item in my Glam Bag was definitely exciting! It's a lovely dark charcoal with silver shimmer throughout.

For the price of this product, I am very pleased with the pigmentation and versatility! The two dry swipes (on the bottom) was very smooth to work with and soft to touch when applying with fingers. Over NYX's Jumbo Pencil in Milk it darkened beautifully, made the silver shimmer pop out better and even dry blended it didn't get too patchy but created a soft shadowy coverage. The staying power was great with a primer (both Urban Decay's Original Primer Potion and/or NYX's Jumbo Pencil), and fairly decent without one but I'd always recommend using one. With a setting spray after application it's even better! What's great about this color is that it can be used for a good smokey eyeliner, an allover smoked out eye, or even some crease shadowing or "V" shape in a cat-eye. Definitely a handy, classic and sexy color to have around!

BUTTER LONDON
NAIL POLISH
in La Moss

"A vampy deep, dark red nail lacquer full of red wine, just like it's inspiration." - from butterlondon.com

Absolutely GORGEOUS dark oxblood red! It's smooth, luxurious and a rich, vivacious shade. The only other oxblood polish I have is Julep's Coco, but this color is just a tad darker and deeper in shade and not quite as thick.

Just a note on my swatching - since I am in the middle of the 30 Manis Marathon, I've been having to redo my nails fairly often, which I can handle every couple of days or so, but when you add in polishes from subs here and there, it's a bit trickier for me to constantly do swatches on myself...HENCE, my swatch sticks! I'll be trying to actually USE the new colors within my 30 Manis Marathon (as I did with Ruffian's Delirium in my violet mani) but unfortunately for this oxblood, I don't really have a good way to use it in my current mani lineup. Please let me know if ya'll really dislike the swatch sticks or really need to see them on nails and I'll try to accommodate!

The swatch here has two coats of La Moss, with no top coat, so you can see it dries just a TEENSY bit glossy, but not too much. It's still not quite completely opaque but I think two coats should be adequate when applied evenly. I didn't have too much trouble with streaking but it definitely needs two coats to even out better. I would prefer it to be just a TEENSY bit thicker, but it's still gorgeous!

STARLOOKS
KOHL EYE PENCIL
in Obsidian

"Dramatically emphasize your eyes with Starlooks' intensely-pigmented Kohl Eye pencil! These ultra-soft liners glide across delicate lids without pulling." - from starlooks.com

Yay Starlooks! I'm a Starlooks subscriber as well, and love it, so I always get excited to see it in an Ipsy Glam Bag! This is my 2nd Starlooks from Ipsy item I've received, the first being a lip liner in Tickle Me Pink in my June 2013 Ipsy bag. I already own a few Ipsy eyeliners, but not Obsidian, so I was excited!

One of their Kohl Eye Pencils I already own is Onyx, which is a dark black and is very similar to Obsidian, but it seems Obsidian is just a taaaad lighter in hue and more of a smokey black. As you can see by the swatches, it glides on fairly easily and makes a nice thin line when sharpened but does require a bit of finesse to curve. Still, it's fairly soft but it wasn't quite as soft as other eyeliners I've used and very lightly pulled on my eyes when I applied. The staying power was awesome though and with a setting spray it didn't budge an inch all day! I feel like I'd really prefer this as a smokey liner that I can smudge rather than a crisp, classic liner. On the waterline it lasted about 2 hours before needing major touchups. I also loved using this under some dark eyeshadow for a sultry nighttime smokey eye.

FINALE

Classic beauty? What's more classic that channeling a bit of a modern Marilyn Monroe? Unfortunately, I can't do her sexy, sleepy bedroom eyes, but I certainly can make her characteristic beauty mark on her face!

TOLD you this lip balm was PIGMENTED! It is such a gorgeous shade!

Yes, yes I did use the eyeliner for the beauty mark! I just went for a simple, classic cat-eye, but didn't quite go all the way with Marilyn's under eye eyeliner shadow to make it look like her false lashes were creating a shadow because...well because I'm not wearing false lashes! I wanted to show ya'll the mascara...

As you can see, the mascara really does add some nice lift and length in the lashes as well as some thickening towards the roots and slightly out. Here I'm wearing about 2 coats of the mascara, with a light coat at the tips, along with two coats on the bottom lashes. I LOVE the Cryptonite eyeshadow, isn't it GORGEOUS. I used Urban Decay's Original Primer Potion all over the eyelid, then blended on NYX's Jumbo Pencil in Milk. I then lightly brushed on some creamy-white matte eyeshadow all over the lid up to the eyebrow and then blended in the Cryptonite in a 'V' shape on the outer corner of my eye and into the crease to pull my eye shape outwards. I then used Starlook's Obsidian Kohl Eye Pencil for my winged cat-eye but didn't apply it to my waterline as I wanted my eyes to look a little more melancholy and heavy (Marilyn-esque). Then I applied light bronzer to sculpt, soft rosy red blush to balance the lips, mascara, beauty mark and voila!

I really enjoyed this month's Glam Bag! I think I'll definitely be using all the products up and I'm super pleased with it's worth. Thanks for another great month, Ipsy!

Positively Polished - 30 Manis Marathon #8

30 MANIS MARATHON
MANI #8 -
METALLIC

I hope everyone is having a FABULOUS weekend! I am absolutely ready to chill, relax, catch up on my manis and maybe read a good book! I literally JUST completed this mani as of....oh,....10 minutes ago! ::giggles:: and horror of horrors, will be taking it off in 10 minutes as well. I do apologize, I am SO behind the 30 Manis Marathon! Hopefully, I'll be able to catch up soon!

This mani just cracks my Hubby up, he says it looks like resistors from an electric circuit! Which I thought...hmm....YES THEY DO! I totally ::ahem:: planned that....right?...RIGHT. Teehee!

Here are the polishes I used....

 From Left to Right:

  • Essie - Matte About You (matte topcoat)
  • Bondi New York - Top of the Rock
  • Bondi New York - City Slicker
  • Essie - No Place Like Chrome
  • CoverGirl - Perfect Penny
  • Sally Hansen Lustre Shine - Firefly

*Not Shown: Bondi New York - I'm Vers (basecoat)

For this mani I used I'm Vers as a base coat, then applied two coats of Top of the Rock as my base color. I then covered the nails with two coats of Matte About You to mattify them. For the stripes I placed striping tape across the nail, varying the number of lines between either 1, 2 or 3 stripes of tape for width. Then I used one coat of the four remaining colors (City Slicker, Firefly, Perfect Penny and No Place Like Chrome) for the stripes! You could easily accomplish a very similar look using striping tape for the stripes instead of painting the stripes on, but I had my heart set on these four particular colors! I did not add a top coat because I wanted to keep Top of the Rock mattified and the stripes shiny.

Neeeeext up is RAINBOW! How exciting!

Happy Makeuping and Polishing!

Birchbox - September 2013

HERITAGE

Happy 3 Year Anniversary to Birchbox! This month they are celebrating their 3 years of their very popular Birchbox subscription service with a fun array of classic to ultra modern, fashionable products in every box. There were a few that I previewed that I was hoping to receive this month and I did get some! If you missed my preview post, here is the link:

Here is what Birchbox has to say this month!...

"HERITAGE"

"The best part about beauty? It's not the glitter or the gloss, or even those miraculous antioxidants from far-off lands. It's the stories. Every brand we work with, from the just-hatched to the iconic, has it's own fascinating history. Just look at Ruffian, a New York-based fashion label started by two designers with a flair for Victorian drama. Their first nail lacquer collection - which all our subscribers will get to try this month - was inspired by the runways but voted on by you. File that away for party conversation when someone compliments your mani.

This also happens to be our anniversary month, and we can't let it pass without thanking the people who have helped create our story: our members. All we had was an idea - we needed you to add the magic."

xoxo,
Katia, Hayley & the Birchbox Team

Love it! I adore makeup history, in fact, I was watching some fascinating videos on YouTube from the awesome Lisa Eldridge about the very thing. Here's some fab links:

and now, on to my box!

I received: hairspray, nail polish, face polisher, a balm, hair mask

To the review! ::sounds the charge::

SERGE NORMANT
META LUXE HAIR SPRAY

"Airy mist that keeps your 'do smooth and frizz-free, and also shields strands from UV rays." - from 2013 September Birchbox card

This is my second Serge Normant product that I've received in a beauty sub. The first was the Serge Normant Dry Shampoo (click to read review), which I typically HATE dry shampoos, but this was is phenomenal! It SERIOUSLY gives incredible volume, cuts down the oiliness and lasts all day. I absolutely loved it. This product though, unfortunately, was just not for me. I have such issues with hair sprays, I seriously do! My hair is the snobbiest thing when it comes to them. My hair is thin but heavy from easily getting oily and the weight and doesn't like to volumize, plus parts of it are straight and other parts are quite curly so styling it can be....well....entertaining, shall we say? Some days it loves to cooperate and other days it just hates my guts.

I tried using this product several different ways upon several different occasions, but it just wouldn't do what I needed it to do. It's one of those very strong, fast action (and loud I might add lol) sprays that sort of knock the wind out of you. It also has a pretty strong typical hairspray scent, which I'm not usually a fan of. It always ends up overpowering my perfume when I go out! A big question is, does it work, however? Hmmmm, yes and no for me. It covers a wide area fairly well, and it does have some hold, but for someone with thin hair who wants volume, I don't think it really worked well on me. I felt like my bangs fell a bit through the day, and they normally stay perked up with my favorite hairsprays. Also, since this hairspray didn't add any volume at all, it doesn't offer the main thing that I need. It provided light hold, but not enough to keep my hair from going flat after a few hours and it didn't provide any real shine or control my crazy frizz. All in all, just not for my hair. Let me know if you have better luck with this product and what methods you used!

GRANDCENTRAL BEAUTY
S.M.A.R.T. SKIN PERFECTING POLISH

"This multitasking made with natural botanicals exfoliates, tones, smooths, and moisturizes." - from 2013 September Birchbox card

This was a very unusual product for me to try out! It sounded like it'd be a super, all-rounded, multitasking wonder but...hate to sound so down in this post, but it didn't have any amazing effect on me either. As soon as I began massaging it onto my skin, I felt a warming sensation and immediately after my rosacea started to flare up and continued throughout the process and for a few hours after I finished. It's a clear formula (albeit a TAD cloudy) with tiny little clear polishing beads in it that you really can't see at all but you can definitely feel once you start rubbing it on. For me, though, it wasn't enough of an exfoliated power to really feel like it was exfoliating. It could be that I'm used to a stronger exfoliation product, or it's main purpose isn't for that. Since it is called a polisher, I'll focus on that. It did, ever so lightly, polish my skin, but nothing that was nicely noticeable or outstanding. I used this product for almost a week with little to no difference. It did feel slightly more moisturized after use, and I did notice that I didn't need to apply as much moisturizer/cream after using this though! So here's a breakdown of what  it's supposed to do: Smooths - Yes, ever so slightly, but not so much noticeably, more touchable than anything. Moisturizes - Yes, just a bit to where I don't have to slather on moisturizer afterwards but not to where I don't need any at all. Anti-Aging - Hard to say. Redness-Reducing - Definitely not for me! It had the opposite effect! Tones - Hmmmm, maybe a teensy weensy bit? Not much for me as well, but it did have some effect.

In the end, I just don't think this product is for me. I think this would be better suited for someone with normal skin to slightly oily skin and no rosacea.

RUFFIAN
NAIL LACQUER in Delirium

"Bold purple from the fashion label's first lacquer collection. Exclusive to Birchbox!" - from 2013 September Birchbox card

THIS COLOR. Oh my, my, my. It is STUNNING. It is the richest, most vibrant shade of purple. When Birchbox members were called to vote for what shade they wanted to be made from Ruffian for an future Birchbox, this was one of the shades I voted for and I'm SO glad I did now! The bottle is so darn adorable, dontchathink?

I DIE. Look at this color! It's such a vibrant purple in the light, but then such a dark, deep black purple in the shadows. Yes, this is NOT my finger, this is a swatch stick! I have had my nails done so much with the 30 Manis Marathon, unfortunately, I'm a little stuck at the moment when it comes to swatching colors on my hands, but fortunately I used this exact shade in a recent 30 Manis post that I WILL be able to show you it on my hands, just with other shades, however, I thought I'd go ahead and show you an individual swatch as well! I'll have the pic of the mani in the finale ::wink::

The polish went on perfectly, only needing two coats for full opacity (shown in pic above). It dries somewhat between matte and satin and I had no issues with bubbling, pooling or runnings. It's a slightly thick formula, but it dries very quickly.

DR. LIPP
ORIGINAL NIPPLE BALM FOR LIPS

"Originally made for nursing moms, this ultrahydrating balm is a makeup artist fave." - from 2013 September Birchbox card

I KNOW....nipple balm. That is the WEIRDEST thing to say ::giggles::. If you're a longtime Birchbox subscriber, this product should be familiar to you as it has been going out for a little while now, and I must say, at first I didn't want to receive it at all and was SO disappointed that I did finally. However, once I tried it, I fell in love. NO, not on my lips and CERTAINLY not on my...well, you know, the name of it....but on my CUTICLES! Ladies....if you need some serious cuticle help then THIS is the product for YOU! I kid you not, this little baby will soften them right up. Dryness, cracking, peeling, you name it, it will fix those cuticles right up! It's a very thick balm, much thicker than a typical lip balm, but it spreads easily and stays on for quite some time, providing excellent moisturization and hydration where needed. I love putting this on after a mani or before I go to bed, it works wonders! In fact, I've already bought a full-size!

BEAUTY EXTRA:

KERATHERAPY
DEEP CONDITIONING MASQUE

"Right any number of hair sins with this intensely restorative, keratin-infused masque." - from 2013 September Birchbox card

::leaps and bounds through barrels of hair masks::....ok, maybe that's a bit dramatic, but OH MY GOODNESS, I suddenly have hair masks galore! I went from zero (I need hair masks! Must buy all hair masks) to....every sub gives me one. Well alrighty then! I feel my hair mask prayers have been answered! Moving on to the review....heehee....

I loved this product! It has a slightly sweet, slightly powdery scent to me, but very faint and fresh and myyyyy goodness it made my hair superdupes soft! It slightly brightened my color, didn't weigh my strands down and very deeply hydrated, provided a few days worth of smooth, touchably soft hair. A little really went a long way and the formula was very easy to spread. This foil, as you can, is pretty decently size, but since I have long hair you would think it would only work for one application, but nope! I was able to use it twice! That definitely lets me know that a full-size would last quite a while. Possibly one of the best hair masques I've yet to try!

WORTH AND PURCHASE:

Serge Normant Meta Luxe Hair Spray:
  • Fullsize (7.5 oz) - $25
  • I received a 2.0 oz travel size - $6.67

Definitely a higher worth box than last month, so I am quite pleased! The sample sizes were fantastic, I received a nail polish, which I ALWAYS love, and four of the five products were over $5 worth each! Well done this month, Birchbox, I'm very happy with it!

FINALE

So I may not have been madly in love with a few items in this month's box but I still thoroughly enjoyed trying everything out! The hair spray, and face polisher weren't good for me, but everything else was fabulous! This is probably one of the better boxes I've received this year! Here is the promised finale pic of the nails, which you may have already seen from my last 30 Manis Marathon post!...

Quite obviously the deeper purple is the Ruffian Delirium, and didn't I tell you it was absolutely gorgeous? Here's the link to the post if you'd like to read more on it! -

Positively Polished - 30 Manis Marathon #7

30 MANIS MARATHON
MANI #7 - BLACK & WHITE

In sleep he saaaang to me, in dreams he caaaame....that voice which caaaalls to me, and speaks my naaaame, and do I dream again? For now I fiiiiind....the PHAAANTOM of the opera is there...inside my miiiiiind......

::Ahem::....I do apologize, every time I look at this mani, I can't help singing that song! So I LOVED, loved, loved working on this mani! This is my 2nd time stamping (ever) and I had so much fun with this one compared to my last. I actually was able to do them all in one go, instead of having to continually redo and reapply polish like my previous stamping catastrophe!

I kept it simple with the polishes this time, since it was only black and white....

 From Left to Right:

        • Nails Inc. - Kensington Caviar Top Coat
        • Konad - Special Polish in Black
        • Nailgirls - White #1
*Not Shown - Bondi New York - I'm Vers (base coat)

For this mani I applied one coat of Bondi's I'm Vers as a base, then two coats of Nailgirls' White #1. I used two different Bundle Monster plates for the stamping.

Bundle Monster plate #BM08
for the Chandelier (bottom)

Bundle Monster plate #BM21
for the swirl design (top center)

I used Konad's Special Black Polish for the stamping, and if you look closely at the swirl design and my nails, you'll see that I chose not to use the entire design. I did not apply polish to the top left corner above the center swirl! My nails are fairly large compared to these stamping plates so I knew it'd be better if I had an image that didn't have a straight edge at the top.

After I rolled on each design, I applied a teardrop rhinestone to the bottom of the chandelier, and small dot rhinestones to the center of each swirl on the other nails. I then used a tiny dotting tool to make the chain for the chandelier. I finished everything with a coat of Nail's Inc. Kensington Caviar Top Coat!

Coming up next....METALLIC Nails!

Happy Makeuping and Polishing!
